Major beaches of Cuba, classification

Guanabo (Ciudad de la Habana)***: This beach, located on the north coast of the island of Cuba and belonging to the Eastern Beaches, is 23 kilometers east-northeast of Bahía de La Habana in the Habana del Este municipality. Its coastline stretches 2.8 kilometers long.
El Salado (La Habana)**: Just 9 kilometers north of Caimito municipality in La Habana province, this beach is located on the north coast of the island of Cuba and is 600 kilometers long. El Salado river flows into it forming a sand bar.
Bacuranao (Ciudad de La Habana)**: It belongs to the Eastern Beaches and it is located on the north coast of Cuba, in the inlet of Bacuranao, 12 kilometers from La Bahía de La Habana and it is characterized by a small coastline having brownish-gray sands.
Santa María del Mar (Ciudad de La Habana)****: Located on the north coast of the island of Cuba and belonging to the Eastern Beaches, it is situated in the Habana del Este municipality, 18.5 kilometers east-northeast of La Bahía de La Habana.
Tarará (Ciudad de La Habana)***: This beach, which belongs to the Eastern Beaches, has a 500-kilometer-long coastline and it is located on the north coast of La Bahía de La Habana.
Mégano (Ciudad de La Habana)***: It lies on the north coast of the island of Cuba, 17 kilometers from La Bahía de La Habana. It belongs to the Eastern Beaches and has a coastline of 500 meters long.
Playa Baracoa (Ciudad de La Habana)**: Situated on the north coast of the island of Cuba and 7 kilometers from the city of Bauta, this beach has a 2.6-kilometer-long coastline which presents accumulations of sand and outcrops of sharp rocks.
Bonita (Camagüey)****: To the north of the island of Cuba on the archipelago of Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, on the east coast of Sabinal Cay and 16 kilometers from the city of Nuevitas, it has a 2-kilometer-long coastline and a maximum depth of 3 meters. Its strip of fine white sand has the presence of dunes and vegetation of coastal plants (uvas caletas).
Cayo Romano (Camagüey)****: It is located on the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, to the north of the island of Cuba, 27 kilometers north of Punta Piloto.
Punta de Piedra (Camagüey)**: It is located 12 kilometers from the mouth of the Máximo River, in the Nuevitas municipality, in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey. It has a projecting rocky coast, peaty soils, vegetation of red mangroves and it is surrounded by coral reefs.
Cayo Guayaba (Camagüey)****: It is on the north of the island of Cuba in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, 25 kilometers from the village of Sola. With a flat surface, it has an area of 94 square kilometers. On the northeast coast are the beaches, the rest is covered with mangroves.
Cayo Cruz (Camagüey)****: It is situated 17.5 kilometers from Cayo Romano, on the north of the island of Cuba, in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey. It has a total area of 25 square kilometers. The beaches on the north coast have dunes and a typical vegetation, on the south the coast is low and covered with mangroves.
Playa Sabinal (Camagüey)****: It lies on Cayo Sabinal, to the north of the island of Cuba, in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, 12 kilometers from the city of Nuevitas. The beach covers 35 kilometers on the north coast of the cay.
Cayo Coco Beaches (Cayo Coco)*****: These beaches are located on the north of the island of Cuba, in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, 30 kilometers from the small town of Punta Alegre. It has an area of 370 square kilometers and is 31 kilometers in length. It has a flat surface with an average height of 2 to 5 meters with dunes of up to 12 meters high, one of the highest in the country. On the north coast it has natural landscapes of interest to tourists such as the lagoon, the point and beach of Colorada, the point Coco and the inlet of Puerto Coco. It is linked to the island of Cuba by a maritime road which starts on the island of Turiguanó.
Playa Pilar (Cayo Guillermo)*****: It is situated on Cayo Guillermo, on the north of the island of Cuba, in Los Jardines del Rey and it is located 6 kilometers from Cayo Coco and linked to it by a maritime road. It is considered to be one of the best beaches in Cuba and in the world.
Cayo Paredón Grande ****: To the north of the island of Cuba, in the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, Jardines del Rey, 10 kilometers from Cayo Romano. It has a flat area of 8 square kilometers and on the northeast coast it has white sand beaches, the south coast presents cliffs and an inlet. It has a lighthouse with a range of 26 nautical miles.
Playa Blanca, Playa Sirena, Playa Paraíso, Playa Lindamar, Playa Los Cocos, Playa Tortuga (Cayo Largo)*****: This cay is located to the south of the island of Cuba, in the Canarreos Archipelago, 100 kilometers east of La Isla de la Juventud. It has a total area of 28 km2 and more than 23 kilometers of fine sand beaches sloping gradually, a light swell, and a vegetation of coastal plants (uvas caletas) and coconut trees. In the fauna are outstanding the seagulls, the turtles and the pelicans.
Playa Rancho Luna (Cienfuegos)***: This beach is located on the south coast of the island of Cuba, 11 kilometers from the city of Cienfuegos. It has a coastline of 620 meters.
Playa El Inglés (Cienfuegos)***: Also known as Playa Fría, it belongs to the Cumanayaguay municipality, located just 25 kilometers from the city of Trinidad, on the south coast of the island of Cuba. It is considered to be the best beach in the coastal stretch of Cienfuegos-Trinidad, with the predominance of corals and a great diversity in the fauna.
Playa Larga (Ciénaga de Zápata)***: It is located inside La Bahía de Cochinos, on the south coast of the island of Cuba, 93.6 kilometers from Matanzas City. With a coastline of 400 meters, the beach is characterized by a cumulative boggy coast, with a vegetation of coastal plants (uvas caletas) and casuarina.
Playa Girón (Ciénaga de Zapata)***: This beach is also located inside La Bahía de Cochinos (The Bay of Pigs), on the south coast of the island of Cuba, 28.7 kilometers from the small town of Playa Larga. It is 200 meters long and was declared a National Monument. Its coast is abrasive, having cliffs and thick sand. It is surrounded by cuasarinas.
Playa Guardalavaca (Holguín)*****: This beach is located 21 kilometers from the small town of Banes, on the north coast of the island of Cuba. The length of its coastline is 2.8 kilometers. Its strip of fine white sand has a width ranging from 50 to 160 meters. It is divided into two sections by means of a 1-kilometer-long cliff. It is bordered by a coral reef at a depth of less than 1.8 meters and the water has great visibility. The western section of the beach has a length of 800 meters, stretching from a small estuary to the cliff and it is covered with coastal plants (uva caletas). The eastern section is 1 kilometer long from the cliff to the estuary, having casuarina trees and other types of plants. In this area is found an endemic species of shrimp in Cuba, the red shrimp.
Playa Pesquero Nuevo (Holguín)***: It is located on the north coast of the island of Cuba, 1 kilometer from the small town of Rafael Freyre. Its coastline is 0.9 kilometers long. It is inside an inlet and has a narrow strip of sand.
Cayo Saetía (Holguín)****: With a general area of 40 km2, the cay is located on the north coast of the island of Cuba, 19.5 km from the city of Mayarí. This cay, having a rectangular shape and an irregular surface, separates both bays Nipe and Levisa. The northern coast has stacks, under which there are small beaches. The south coast presents more geographical features with several inlets and cays. It is connected to solid ground by a drawbridge which is on the canal Dumois. In it there are two lighthouses: one, with a range of 10 nautical miles, which regulates the access to the Bay of Nipe and, the other one, of 7 nautical miles, for the Bay of Levisa.
Playa Blanca (Holguín)****: It is found on the north coast of the island of Cuba, 6 kilometers from the town of Rafael Freyre and has a 250-meter-long coastline. It is located at the entrance to the bay of Bariay. It has precipitous coasts, sandy soils of low elevation and isolated trees.
Playa Covarrubias (Las Tunas)***: This beach is located on the point Covarrubias, on the north coast of the island of Cuba and 16 kilometers from the entrance to the bay of Manatí.
Playa de Pajarito (Pinar del Río)***: 9 kilometers from the small town of La Palma, on the north coast of the island of Cuba. This is a small beach with clear waters and a sandy-rocky bottom with a narrow strip of sand on its shore.
María La Gorda (Pinar del Río)*****: It lies on the south of the island of Cuba, in the Pinar del Río province, 42 kilometers from the small town of Sandino, on the Bahía de Corrientes. It has a strip of sand with crystal-clear waters and depths varying from 200 to 300 meters, 1 kilometer from the coast. In this place there is a natural drinking water flow.
Playa Cayo Jutía (Pinar del Río)***: With an area of 0.9 km2, the cay is located on the north of the island of Cuba, in the Los Colorados Archipelago and 15 kilometers from the small town of Minas de Matahambre. The cay is low and covered with mangroves, and on the northwest coast lies a white-sand beach having scattered mangroves. To the north and west you will find coral reefs. It has a lighthouse which ranges 18 nautical miles joined to solid ground by an embankment.
Playa cayo Levisa (Pinar del Río)****: This is a white-sand beach surrounded by red mangroves and casuarinas. It lies on the cay after which it is named, 15 kilometers from the small town of La Palma, in the Los Colorados Archipelago.
Cayo Mégano de Casiguas (Pinar del Río)****: Also known as Playa Cayo Paraíso, name given by Ernest Hemingway, this beach lies on the east coast of the cay, 24 kilometers from the small town of La Palma. Its low north coast is covered with mangroves and the west one is low as well with some clearings where beaches are formed. Towards the north of the cay is a coral reef.
Cayo Ensenacho (Villa Clara)***: It is situated to the north of the island of Cuba, in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, Jardines del Rey, 40 kilometers from the city of Caibarién. It stretches for 3.5 kms having a maximum height of 10 meters.
Cayo Las Brujas (Villa Clara)****: It lies 34 km from the city of Caibarién, in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, Jardines del Rey. It is 5.8 km long and has 14 m of maximum height. The cay, covered with mangroves, is rectangular in shape and its surface is flat. To the south there is mud with therapeutic properties.
Cayo Santa María (Villa Clara)*****: It is located to the north of the island of Cuba, in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, Jardines del Rey, 39 km from the small town of Yaguajay. It has a general area of 20 km2 and a length of 14 km. To the south there are low parts of less than 5 m deep. On the north there is a beach stretching 15 km long having dunes of up to 10 m high. To the center there is a thick vegetation with the presence of animals such as the jutía conga, the Batista Hawk and the iguana.
Santa Lucía (Camagüey)****: It is situated 22 km from the city of Nuevitas, north of the island of Cuba, at the entrance to the bay of Nuevitas. It has a 21-kilometer-long coastline with dunes as a result of sand accumulation. To the south of the beach there is a lacustrine complex parallel to the coastline, surrounded with mangroves. 20 km from the beach there is a coral reef regulating the wave pattern and making the interior waters calmer.
Playa Cazonal (Santiago de Cuba)****: It is located on the south coast of the island of Cuba, in the Caribbean, 3.7 km from the small town of Baconao, a Santiago de Cuba municipality. It has a sand coastline of 2 km long, surrounded by coastal vegetation.
Playa Bueycabón (Santiago de Cuba)***: It is situated in the Caribbean Sea, 14.5 km from the city of Santiago de Cuba. With shallow waters because of the situation of the south coast of the island of Cuba, the beach has a 1-kilometer-long coastline.
Ensenada de Chivirico (Santiago de Cuba)***: Located in the Caribbean Sea, on the south coast of the island of Cuba and 1 km from the small town of Chivirico, it has a maximum length of 500 km, it is 2.1 km wide and 17 m deep. It is characterized for being an inlet in the coast, surrounded by reefs. The river Guamá flows into it.
Playa María Aguilar (Trinidad)****: It is located on the point María Aguilar, on the south coast of the island of Cuba, 7.5 km from the city of Trinidad. It has a height of 2 meters and is located on the Ancón Peninsula.
Playa Ancón (Trinidad)****: It is just 7.5 km from the city of Trinidad, on the Ancón Peninsula, south of the island of Cuba. Its coastline has a length of 4 km, with the presence of sand and the bottom covered with a type of grass.
Varadero (Matanzas)*****: It is located on the Icacos Peninsula, on the north coast of the island of Cuba. It has a 20-kilometer-long coastline. Varadero has its coast low with the presence of very white and fine sand bars, crystal-clear waters, surrounded by a coastal low of 10m deep, increasing gradually from west to east.
Cayo Galindo (Matanzas)****: It lies north of the island of Cuba in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, Jardines del Rey, 33 km from the northwest of the small town of Martí. With a total area of 2.7 km, it has a flat surface and is covered with mangroves. Its coasts are low and present a beach area to the northwest, surrounded by coral reefs making it difficult for crafts to reach the shore.
Playa Las Coloradas (Granma)****: It lies south of the island of Cuba, in the Gulf of Guacanayabo, 18 km from the small town of Niquero. It has white sands and is protected by a curtain of coastal plants (uvas caletas). It is 1 km long.
Punta Hicacos (Granma)***: It is situated in the Caribbean Sea, on the south coast of the island of Cuba, 3 km from the small town of Pilón. It lies on the Mora inlet, it is low and covered with mangroves.
Ensenada Marea del Portillo (Granma)****: 13 km from the small town of Pilón, on the south coast of the island of Cuba. It is 2.2 km long, 1 km wide and has a maximum depth of 9.6 m. It has a penetration in the coast from Point Farallones to a peninsula of mangroves which stands out of Point Jarro. The coast, in general, is flat and covered with coconut trees. To the west the vegetation consists mostly of mangroves. It has a sandy muddy bottom with reefs.
Punta Francés (Isla de la Juventud)****: It lies on the extreme west of the Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) and the inlet of Siguanea, on the south coast of the island of Cuba. It is characterized by its projection in a boggy land with vegetation of mangroves.
Playa Bibijagua (Isla de la Juventud)***: It is located on the north coast of the Isle of Youth, 8 kilometers from the city of Nueva Gerona. Its coastline is 2.3 kilometers long. It is characterized by its black-colored sands, shallow waters, a gradual slope and a muddy-sandy to stony bottom. Its vegetation consists of thalassias to the shore and in the rest of the beach palm trees can be found.
